Recognise The Silent Symptoms Of Colorectal Cancer
Recognise the Symptoms Of Colorectal Cancer

Each year, there are more than 2,000 new cases of colorectal cancer diagnosed in Singapore, making it the most common type of cancer for men, and second only to breast cancer in women.

Most colorectal cancers start as small benign growths (polyps) on the inner lining of the colon or rectum, and may not cause symptoms at first. However, some types of polyps can turn malignant over time and become cancerous.

What are the first symptoms of colorectal cancer as it advances? Watch out for:

  • A change in bowel habits, such as diarrhoea, constipation and narrowing of stools, that persists for more than a few days
  • Blood in stools
  • Abdominal pain
Timely screening with colonoscopy to detect abnormal polyps is key to early prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer.
If you are above 50 years old or have a family history of colorectal cancer, book a colonoscopy at 6454 0054.
Other common conditions of the colon, rectum, and anus that our colorectal surgeon can offer specialised care on include:
Diverticulitis
Inflammation or infection of the bulges that form in the wall of the colon, and can cause abdominal pain, fever, nausea and a change in bowel habits.
Faecal Incontinence
The inability to control bowel movements, causing stools to leak out unexpectedly.
Anal fistula
An abnormal tunnel that develops within the inside of the anus to the skin around it, with skin irritation around the perianal region, discharge of pus or blood, as well as swelling and redness at the fistula site.
Haemorrhoids
Abnormally enlarged blood vessels in and around the anus, with symptoms that include feeling a lump in the anal region, discomfort and bleeding during bowel movements.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Chronic inflammation of the digestive tract, with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis as the two main types, characterised by bloody diarrhoea, chronic abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss and fatigue.
Pilonidal Sinus/Cyst
A chronic skin infection in the crease between the buttocks near the tailbone (coccyx), causing small tunnels in the skin, which usually contains hair.
Caring for the colorectal well-being of patients, particularly females, for over a decade, Dr Tan understands that conditions of the colon and rectum are issues that many patients find embarrassing and avoid discussing,
but she wants them to understand how important it is to get help to manage changes in their bowel habits and protect their colon health.
Colorectal conditions are very common, and very treatable.
